The ceremony for the award of the IATA CEIV PHARMA certification to BCUBE Air Cargo will take place in Rome on Wednesday, 22nd July 2015, at Villa Miani in via Trionfale 151. The certification qualifies the new temperature controlled cargo facility dedicated to pharmaceutical products that the company operates at Fiumicino Airport’s Cargo City.

BCUBE Air Cargo, a part of the BCUBE Group which is one of the leading international players in the field of integrated logistics services, is the first airport cargo handling company in Southern Europe to receive the coveted CEIV Pharma IATA certification and among the top private airport operators in the world after Singapore and Brussels airports.

This important recognition was awarded by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Centre of Excellence for Independent Validators in Pharmaceutical Handling (CEIV Pharma). This organization has implemented a global certification program that, through a process of qualitative validation assesses airport hubs specifically dedicated to pharmaceutical products. It provides a qualification characterised by high standards of practice recognised worldwide by airport operators and serves as a point of reference for forwarders and pharmaceutical companies. The program integrates IATA’s Temperature Control Regulations (TCR), Good Distribution Practices (GDP) guidelines (with requirements of the World Health Organisation protocols related to the specific air transport needs of pharmaceutical products at a controlled temperature. It is specifically dedicated to the drug supply chain logistics services and is particularly attentive to the needs of global production and transport. The CEIV Pharma program certifies that players in the value chain of air transport goods operate under the highest standards of management and transport of temperature-sensitive drugs. This gives confidence to pharmaceutical companies and ensures that their needs for logistics in the cold chain are met through a process of independent certification.

The CEIV Pharma certification project was implemented in the first half of 2015 for the subsidiaries of BCUBE Air Cargo operating at the airports of Rome Fiumicino (Fiumicino Logistica Europa) and Milan Malpensa (Malpensa Logistica Europa), the latter of which is schedule to complete IATA validation by 31st July 2015. The overall project also includes the 2016 certification of the cargo platforms within the airports of Milan Linate and Venice, where BCUBE Air Cargo currently operates.

The project includes a new infrastructure system and an on-the-web monitoring software platform, as designated by GDP guidelines, exclusively dedicated to pharmaceutical shipments at the airport (about 1,700 square meters in total with certified temperature control from -20°C to +25°C) and characterised by exclusive services of refrigerated transport alongside the aircraft in order to mitigate the risk of temperature deviations on the airport apron. The platforms of Milan Malpensa and Rome Fiumicino, which among other actions ensure the management of all types of active and passive pharmaceutical containers, are linked through controlled temperature shuttle system loaders which are monitored by the same control tower. The entire “Pharma” logistics system of BCUBE Air Cargo is organised with dedicated and qualified resources according to internationally recognised standards for the handling and management of pharmaceutical shipments. This allows BCUBE Air Cargo to offer pharmaceutical companies and forwarding agents the competitive advantage of providing its internationally connected clients with cold chain integrity while operating directly from Italian airports.

Thanks to the investments made and the certification obtained, BCUBE Air Cargo is now looking to become the first private ground handling company in Southern Europe to be qualified for the handling pharmaceutical goods at a controlled temperature for the transport by air by offering a specialised service and distinctive quality.

“We are a dynamic and innovative company,” says Mauro Grisafi, General Manager of BCUBE Air Cargo, “and we are aware that the pharmaceutical market requests quality logistics services in the airport for the highest level management of its products. BCUBE Air Cargo is at the forefront to meet these expectations. Thus, Italy will have its first qualified and IATA CEIV Pharma certified ground handler addressing the logistics of the pharmaceutical product. Pharmaceutical companies and forwarders, strong in such an Italian airport logistics system can now significantly reduce the time of delivery of the pharmaceutical product destined for other countries in the world knowing that they no longer have to triangulate with airports in Northern Europe. This will help to generate benefits for the whole Italian system thus being able to compete well with other countries with tools and services of the highest quality. ”

Looking ahead, BCUBE Air Cargo aims to provide a worldwide community of CEIV Pharma certified platforms: “The next step” – continues Mauro Grisafi – “will be the integration gateway between qualified international pharmaceuticals. It is essential that pharmaceutical products are transported and managed according to the standard rules of the cold chain through a global logistics network that uses high-level procedures in a competitive environment. ”

Enrico Bazzi, CEO of BCUBE Group and BCUBE AIR CARGO, said “The investment we have made to provide ourselves with the systems and infrastructure in airports, which enabled us to get the important recognition of the IATA certification, demonstrates BCUBE’s commitment in achieving excellence in all areas of logistics in which we operateby providing our customers with innovative, integrated and the highest quality solutions. Airport logistics is a distinctive element of our service offering and also a strategic hub for the competitiveness of our country, including initiatives like this is crucial to promoting development.
